On this day in 1816, General George H. Thomas was born in Southampton County, Virginia. Growing up on a Southern plantation, he taught 15 people enslaved by his family how to read. After graduating from West Point and serving in the Mexican-American War, Thomas remained loyal to the United States when the Civil War began, severing ties with his Confederate family. | |
